Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Neurology Neurocritical Care Fellowship

Welcome and thank you for your interest in our comprehensive Neurocritical Care Fellowship training program at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Our program is nationally recognized and accredited by United Council of Neurological Subspecialties (UCNS). Being the Level 1 Trauma center, comprehensive stroke center and comprehensive epilepsy center for Southeastern Wisconsin, our program provides fellows with the opportunity to gain broad experience in managing complex diseases and high acuity patients. Fellows receive clinical training under the supervision of board certified neurointensivists from various academic backgrounds in collaboration with faculty from neurology, neurosurgery, anesthesia, trauma surgery, emergency medicine and critical care medicine. The Neurosciences ICU consists of 20 ICU beds and 6 step-down beds with surge capacity.

Through this program, you’ll have the opportunity to work with a diverse set of faculty members. Rotating through the Neurosciences ICU, the Medical ICU and the Surgical ICU, fellows will train alongside other critical care fellows from nationally recognized and accredited training programs. Aside from core rotations, elective rotations are available in EEG and Epilepsy Surgery, Critical Care Nephrology, Critical Care Infectious Disease, Trauma Surgery, Neurosurgery, Neuroendovascular Surgery, Neuroradiology, Neuropathology, Neuro-anesthesiology, Cardiovascular Critical Care, Advanced Bronchoscopy, Cardiovascular Medicine and Echocardiography. This variety allows for our program to complement the training of fellows from various backgrounds including Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Neurosurgery and Neurology.

Neurocritical Care fellows will care for critically-ill patients suffering from a wide variety of neurological disorders. This will include but is not limited to Moderate-Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Subarachnoid Hemorrhage and Neurovascular disease, Ischemic Stroke, Peri-operative Neurosurgical Management, Neuromuscular Disease, Neuroinflammatory Disease and CNS Infections. Our clinical training is supplemented by weekly Neurocritical Care Didactics, Morbidity and Mortality Conferences, Journal Clubs and various educational conferences that are shared with other critical care training programs.

Procedural training includes central lines, arterial lines, intubations, bronchoscopy, basic and advanced point of care ultrasounds, intercostal drains, and exposure to multimodality monitoring. We are amongst few fellowship programs nationally to offer bedside percutaneous tracheostomy training to our fellows.

As a Neurocritical Care fellow, trainees are a part of the Wisconsin Institute of Neuroscience (WINS). We take pride in advancing our field by participating in multiple clinical trials and encourage our fellows to participate in research through the MCW Neuroscience Research Center. Fellows regularly engage in a multidisciplinary morbidity and mortality review, quality improvement projects, and educational initiatives.
