Walgreens-MCW Community-Based Specialty Pharmacy Residency Program

Residents will become highly sought community-based pharmacists. 

Build an advanced skill set in managing patients with complex disease states holistically, plus experience in developing patient-centered services in the specialty environment. Graduates would have the abilities and experiences necessary to secure positions with direct, clinically focused patient care, ambulatory care practice settings, management opportunities and academia. 
Gain experience in the delivery of clinical services, conducting research, developing management expertise and precepting students. In partnership with the Medical College of Wisconsin School of Pharmacy, residents will participate in both a teaching and research certification class.

The PGY1 residency has been granted Pre-Candidate status by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

Duration

This is a 12-month, full-time residency beginning annually on July 1. Time will be split between two Walgreens Specialty Pharmacies and one ambulatory care setting in Milwaukee, WI.

Candidate Requirements
  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree from a college or school of pharmacy accredited by ACPE
  • Wisconsin pharmacist license within 90 days of the start of the residency program
  • Submission of completed residency application materials to PhORCAS
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Three professional letters of recommendation
  • A letter of intent explaining why you are pursuing a community pharmacy residency and what you hope to gain from the residency program
  • Official university transcripts
  • Completed online application at www.walgreens.jobs
  • Travel to Milwaukee for an onsite interview (upon invitation)
  • Registered with the National Matching Service (NMS)
Residency Activities

The resident will participate in the provision of patient-care services through the following:

  • Disease state management programs in HIV/AIDS, Oncology, neurology, fertility, hepatitis C, inflammatory conditions, and other specialty disease states
  • Medication Therapy Management, with an ongoing patient load
  • Specialty medication monitoring and follow-up
  • Pharmacist-administered immunizations
  • Development of health and wellness programs
  • Community outreach programs
  • Hazardous compounding

The resident will participate in the following activities that strengthen research, practice management, and educator skills:

  • Design and conduct a practice-based research project
  • Write a business plan for a new or improved service
  • Develop and conduct a continuous quality improvement project
  • Draft a collaborative practice protocol and resent research findings at appropriate regional and national professional meetings
  • Execute marketing strategy for patient care services
  • Provide clinical instruction to student pharmacists
  • Participate in a Teaching Certificate Program
  • Participate in a Research Certificate Program
