Michelle Hume, MD, PhD

Michelle Hume, MD, PhD, is board certified in both general and forensic psychiatry. She is presently a staff psychiatrist at the Mendota Mental Health Institute, where she treats both juveniles and adults in maximum security units. She received her medical and graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she co-created a PhD program in Clinical Investigation. Dr. Hume also completed residency training at the University of Wisconsin, where she was selected as a co-Chief Resident. She completed fellowship training in forensic psychiatry through the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Hume is a former America Psychiatric Association Leadership Fellow from 2018-2020. In that capacity, she participated in the work of the APA’s Ethics Committee. As Vice-Chair of the Leadership Fellows in 2019-2020, she was privileged to participate in Joint Reference Committee meetings. She was also selected as a Laughlin Fellow by the American College of Psychiatry in 2020, and was the recipient of the Resnick Scholar Award from the Midwest American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law that same year. She remains active in the APA, and was co-Principal Investigator of a survey published last year of APA District Branches regarding ethics activities. She has also been an active member of the Executive Committee of the Wisconsin Psychiatric Association since 2018.

Prior to residency training, Dr. Hume was a Pediatric Ethicist at the US Food and Drug Administration. In this capacity, she coordinated a busy pediatric ethics consultation service and provided advice to any review team in the agency on any ethical issue pertaining to product development in children. She also provided pediatric ethics training to reviewers across the agency. She was the recipient of numerous awards for her work, including the FDA Outstanding Service Award for protecting and promoting the public health of children in 2016.
