Biography
Hi! My name is Emma Wagner and I grew up in Grafton, Wisconsin. In fall of 2022, I graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with dual Bachelor's degrees in Cancer Biology and Genetics and Genomic Sciences along with minors in chemistry and biology. As an undergraduate, I worked as a student researcher investigating the role of miRNAs in lung and breast cancer and exploring potential therapeutic mechanisms for neurofibromatosis type I through Src inhibition. In addition to my research endeavors, I worked as a supplemental instruction leader for biology II students, helping them to gain a deeper understanding of course material and develop effective study habits. I also served in leadership roles within UAB's Undergraduate Cancer Biology Society and Student Association of Genetic Counseling.
My passion for genetic counseling led me to participate in MCW's GC-CREW program, which deepened my understanding of the profession and instilled a profound appreciation for the patient experience. I carried this into my volunteer work as a crisis counselor for Crisis Text Line and as an assistant at Birmingham's Exceptional Foundation, where I had the privilege of making connections with individuals with diverse intellectual abilities.
Outside of school, I balance my time by working as a server and spending time with friends, family, and my dog, Della! I am extremely fortunate to be a part of MCW's third MSGC cohort. I am excited for my journey of personal and professional growth within the vibrant culture and supportive community that MCW fosters, as I look forward to my future as a genetic counselor!
