Biography

Dr. Karthik Somasundaram is a Research Assistant Professor in the Marquette University and Medical College of Wisconsin Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering. He received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Wayne State University in December 2019 and completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Zablocki VA Medical Center Laboratories in the Biomechanics Research Program, Department of Neurosurgery at MCW, where he specialized in biomechanics of the neck, spine and thorax with a focus on examining the mechanics of the orthopedic regions pertinent to different crash environments using experimental and computational techniques.

Dr. Somasundaram’s current work seeks to develop vehicular models and optimized pedestrian human body models for pedestrian safety research. Dr. Somasundaram also participates in research investigating the crash mechanism of occupants in autonomous vehicles. The overall aim of this line of investigation is to elucidate human body kinetics and kinematics under varied loading scenarios using finite element models and advanced modeling techniques.
