Biography

Dr. Maiman specializes in the management of complex spine disorders, integrating his extensive research experience into his clinical practice. Dr. Maiman was involved in the creation of the SpineCare Clinic, the Spinal Cord Injury Center, and the fellowship in spinal surgery. All three programs are nationally recognized. He emphasizes the importance of patient participation in their care, with a strong educational focus.

Dr. Maiman has a consultation practice at SpineCare, and sees patients and operates at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. He is extensively involved in research in spine biomechanics, spinal trauma, and spinal cord injury. He was Chair of Neurosurgery from 2009-2015, stepping down to allow a research focus.

Dr. Maiman earned his Medical Degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin and his Doctorate of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering from Marquette University. His PhD dissertation was the Biomechanics of spinal injuries produced by vertical compression. Dr. Maiman’s Surgical Internship was at the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals as was his Residency in Neurological Surgery. He completed his Fellowship in Spinal Cord Injury at the Zablocki VA.

Dr. Maiman is an active member of many professional organizations and serves on various committees. He is a member of many national professional organizations, including The American Association of Neurological Surgeons, AANS/CNS Joint Section on Spinal Disorders, AANS/CNS Joint Section on Neurotrauma and Critical Care, American Medical Association, Cervical Spine Research society, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and the North American Spine Society.

With a book currently in press titled, Surgery of the Lumbar Spine, Dr. Maiman contributes to published research on spine issues. He has contributed 28 chapters to medical books, 190 peer-reviewed journals, 109 abstracts and many invited papers.
