Dale Heuer, MD

Biography
Dr. Heuer attended Northwestern University in Evanston and Chicago, Illinois, receiving a BS degree in 1976 and an MD degree in 1978. Following completion of his internship at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Affiliated Hospitals in 1979, he attended a basic course in ophthalmology at Pacific Coast Eye Foundation before entering the eye residency at MCW. He served as chief resident in 1981 and completed his residency in 1982.
Dr. Heuer moved to the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida for a National Research Service Award funded fellowship in glaucoma from 1982-1984. During his fellowship he achieved American Board of Ophthalmology at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
He moved to the Doheny Eye Institute at the University of Southern California as assistant professor of ophthalmology in 1986. In 1996 he was appointed professor. The following year, Dr. Heuer returned to MCW as professor and chair of the department of ophthalmology & visual sciences. He served in this role for 21 years before retiring.
Dr. Heuer’s professional activities include having served as the representative to the Council for Graduate Medical Education Residency Review Committee of Ophthalmology of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a voting member of the Food and Drug Administration Ophthalmic Devices Panel. He currently serves on the American Board of Directors and the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology, Fellowship Compliance Committee Board of Managers. He has served as a peer manuscript reviewer for the American Journal of Ophthalmology (AJO).
Dr. Heuer and his wife Jeanine have four children. In his retirement, he spends time at his residences in California and Idaho.

Research Interests
Dr. Heuer was a clinical center principal investigator for the National Eye Institute funded Fluorouracil Filtering Surgery and Collaborative Glaucoma Treatment study. He served as one of three Vice Chairs for the NEI-funded Ocular Hypertension Treatment study.
