Biography
Hello! My name is Ashlyn Arneson, and I am from La Crosse, WI. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay with a BS in Human Biology with an emphasis in Health Science.
During my time in Green Bay, I developed my love of patient care and advocacy as a certified nursing assistant, both in long-term and acute care. I also worked as a resident assistant where I practiced peer mentoring, crisis intervention, and community building. After graduation, I interned with the Sheboygan County Division of Public Health. This role expanded my understanding of trauma informed care, community resource development, and public health communications.
Following undergrad, I was hired as a genetic counseling assistant with UCLA Health Cancer Genetics. As a GCA, I supported genetic counselors in clinic and coordinated expedited genetic testing for patients with current cancer diagnoses through UCLA’s Genetic Testing Station. I also worked on UCLA’s HERSTORY Research Study which aims to develop an understanding of genetic, environmental, and socioeconomic influences on cancer risk for women from underrepresented minority groups. My time at UCLA instilled an appreciation for the impact of genetic counselors and the importance of clinical research in our practice.
I am incredibly grateful for how each of my prior roles has prepared me to become a genetic counselor, and I am ecstatic that I get to continue my journey with the MSGC program at MCW! In my free time, I enjoy reading, thrifting, crocheting, and cuddling with my cat, Amino!
