Biography

Hello everyone! My name is Asia Sobek and I am originally from Chicago, Illinois. I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in May 2023 with my BS in Molecular and Cellular Biology and a minor in Psychology (I-L-L!). I have been interested in genetics since high school, and my passion for genetic counseling blossomed during my time as an undergraduate. I was fortunate enough to partake in an internship with the University of Illinois’ Counseling Center where I gained invaluable advocacy experiences working with fellow undergraduates on campus. Additionally, my interactions and mentorship experience with genetic counselors during this time solidified my desire to pursue genetic counseling as a career. After my time at the University of Illinois, I had the pleasure of working in an industry lab where I learned more about clinical workflows and cancer testing.

While enrolled in the MSGC program, I am working as a Graduate Resident Advisor for the Marquette chapter of the Evans Scholarship. The Evans Scholarship is a college scholarship program that provides full tuition and housing to high-achieving caddies with financial need. I was an Evans Scholar at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and was ecstatic to enter this role at the Marquette chapter. Being on this scholarship was an amazing opportunity, and I am grateful to support current scholars in their academic endeavors.

One of my favorite ways to spend my time is being with my friends and family since they mean so much to me. In my free time I love to cook, bake, and paint! While I am not proficient in these hobbies by any means, I still greatly enjoy them. If you ever need someone to try out a new recipe or restaurant with, I’m your girl!

I am so honored to be a part of the fourth MSGC cohort at the Medical College of Wisconsin. I am excited to learn, grow, network, and create new memories during my time here.
