Biography

Dr. Cortina is highly involved in research and has published numerous manuscripts, including articles in high-impact journals such as The Lancet, JAMA Oncology, JAMA Surgery, and the Annals of Surgical Oncology where he is also a member of the journal’s Editorial Board. His current research focuses on understanding how gender-affirming care may alter cancer risk, screening practices, and treatment recommendations for gender-diverse populations as well as how novel systemic therapies impact surgical decision-making and surgical outcomes for breast cancer patients.

Dr. Cortina’s research is funded through grants from the National Institute of Health’s National Cancer Institute (NIH/NCI), the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), and the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin endowment (AHW). He is also actively involved in several surgical and oncological societies and serves on committees for the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and the Central Surgical Association. Within the Medical College, he serves as Breast Clerkship Director for the Complex General Surgical Oncology fellowship program and leads the Section of Breast Surgery’s quarterly Breast Surgical Oncology Journal Club.
