Biography
Heather Lisko is a board-certified pediatric nurse practitioner with advanced training in acute care pediatrics. Heather brings previous experience in pediatric critical care and has completed the Child Advocacy and Protection Advanced Practice Provider Certification Program. The program includes clinical supervision, subspecialty and community experiences, didactics, and a comprehensive evaluation process to ensure competence as a child abuse pediatrics provider. Her clinical practice is at the Children's Wisconsin-Milwaukee Hospital and Milwaukee Child Advocacy Center where she evaluates children in foster care and children with suspected maltreatment.
In addition to working as a clinician, Heather is the Sexual Abuse Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program Coordinator at Children’s Wisconsin. She has been instrumental in developing the foundation and continued growth of this program. The SANE program is a team of registered nurses trained to provide specialized, comprehensive nursing care to children and their families after a sexual assault—primarily in the emergency room setting. SANE nurses provide trauma-informed, holistic care for the child which includes: the collection of medical-forensic evidence, testing, treatment and prevention of sexually transmitted infections, pregnancy prevention, communication with law enforcement and advocacy partners, as well as follow-up services within the community.
Heather also has several research interests, including child abuse prevention, improved detection of child maltreatment, and long-term outcomes of child abuse victims.
