Dr. Libby Schroeder Named Chief Medical Officer, Froedtert Hospital

Mary Elizabeth “Libby” Schroeder, MD, MS, has accepted the role of chief medical officer (CMO), Froedtert Hospital, effective Thursday, August 1, 2024. Dr. Schroeder joined the MCW Department of Surgery’s Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery in 2020 and served as associate trauma medical director for Froedtert Hospital between 2022 and 2023.

She currently serves as senior medical director, acute care services, for Froedtert Hospital. Additionally, Dr. Schroeder has served in several educational roles during her tenure at MCW. Prior to joining MCW, Dr. Schroeder was assistant professor of surgery at both Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson University and the George Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Schroeder earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from Michigan State University, completed a surgery residency and critical care fellowship at George Washington University and an acute care surgery fellowship at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. In May 2024, she received her Master of Science degree in Health Equity from MCW.

Dr. Schroeder is currently an associate professor in the Department of Surgery’s Division of Trauma and Acute Care. As a well-respected leader, Dr. Schroeder puts the needs of her team and patients first and upholds an expectation of excellence and humanity from her team. As an academic leader and advocate around gun violence and community support, she was recently invited to the White House to discuss the role hospitals can have in gun violence prevention. In her new leadership role at Froedtert Hospital, Dr. Schroeder has a unique opportunity to influence clinical care and support around this public health crisis. Dr. Schroeder is a Presidential Leadership Scholar, honing her leadership abilities through interactions with former U.S. presidents, national key administration leaders, as well as academic, business, and civic leaders. This prestigious program focuses on core leadership expertise and helps scholars gain skills to work across divides while developing a broad professional network.

We are eager for Dr. Schroeder to work closely with leaders and clinicians across Froedtert Health, MCW, Froedtert Hospital and the MCP practice in her new role as Froedtert Hospital CMO. In this new role, she will lead clinical care at Froedtert Hospital, implementing strategic and operational initiatives, overseeing hospital medical staff, and championing clinical quality structures and processes. We are confident that Dr. Schroeder’s experience as a trauma surgeon leading complex teams in high-pressure situations will serve her as she leads clinical care at Froedtert Hospital.

As Dr. Schroeder assumes this leadership role, we also wish to extend our gratitude to Michael Stadler, MD, for his tenure as Froedtert Hospital CMO, a role he held from October 2019 through July 1, 2024. He remains connected to MCW missions and continues to care for patients following his departure from the CMO role.
