Dr. William Hall Appointed Chair of Radiation Oncology
Dr. William Hall appointed Chair of Radiation OncologyMCW is pleased to announce the appointment of William A. Hall, MD, as Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), effective February 1, 2025. Dr. Hall currently holds the Bob Uecker Chair in Pancreatic Cancer Research and serves as Professor and Medical Director in the Department of Radiation Oncology. He holds a secondary appointment as Professor of Surgery in the School of Medicine.
Dr. Hall was selected for this role after a comprehensive national search. I would like to extend my gratitude to Vince Matthews, MD, Chair of the search committee – as well as to the full committee membership – for their unwavering dedication of time, insights and thoughtfulness in undertaking this key recruitment effort. I also would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to Christopher J. Schultz, MD, for his valuable service as Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology since 2016. Dr. Schultz will continue to contribute to MCW as Professor of Radiation Oncology, to steward the Proton Therapy program and to collaborate with our academic industrial partners.
Dr. Hall received his Bachelor of Science degree from Marquette University in 2005 and his MD degree from Loyola University in 2009. He completed a residency in Radiation Oncology at Emory University (2009-2014) and was recruited to MCW in 2014, where he ascended through the ranks and was promoted to full professor in 2023.
Dr. Hall’s primary clinical and research interests include pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer, MRI-guided radiation therapy, renal cell carcinoma and rectal cancer. Dr. Hall’s leadership in MCW’s efforts in MR-guided radiation therapy resulted in 2019 with the first patient treated at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin (the second patient treated in the US and fifth worldwide) on the Elekta high field MR Linear Accelerator. Dr. Hall is a major thought leader and contributor to the worldwide expansion and introduction of high-field MR guidance. Further, Dr. Hall leads multiple NCI-funded ongoing cooperative group trials and much of his research is actively funded by the NIH.
Additionally, Dr. Hall’s leadership has helped launch an international prospective clinical registry for the purpose of capturing outcomes, titled the “MOMENTUM” study. MOMENTUM recently achieved a milestone by accruing more than 6,000 patients internationally. Such data will provide a foundation for an extensive variety of future research, ranging from clinical outcomes to novel imaging biomarker discovery.
Dr. Hall has published more than 235 abstracts, articles, original papers, book chapters and reviews, and has presented at nearly 120 local, regional, national and international lectures and workshops. Dr. Hall also has significant medical student, resident and graduate student teaching experience, and has mentored numerous students, faculty, residents and clinical/research fellows.
Dr. Hall has held many local, regional, national and international leadership positions in radiation oncology, including serving on the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Rectal/Anal Task Force (since 2021) and NCI’s Prostate Task Force (since 2022). Dr. Hall also has served as a leader in several national societies including the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).
Dr. Hall has been recognized for his accomplishments with numerous awards and honors such as the Dr. J Frank Wilson Radiation Oncology Resident Teaching Award (2017); MCW’s Outstanding Medical Student Teacher (2020); MCW’s Outstanding Graduate School Educator (2021); and Milwaukee Magazine’s Milwaukee’s Best Doctors (2022 and 2023).
